One of the things we always get asked about at Trilobyte Digital by SEO clients who come to see us at our offices in Brighton is whether artificial link building works. Whilst it does sometimes there are some very important questions you need to know the answers to.
Artificial link building, or automated link building is one aspect of SEO that has been widely exploited and abused. It has gotten so that the SEO community and search engines frown at its use. However, this is also an effective method for driving traffic to websites. Here, we look at some methods you can use, but carefully; to avoid getting penalised by Google.
Does directory submission work in 2018 as a way to drive rankings?
Directories are the yellow pages of the internet. They categorise websites based on niche and topics covered. Once upon a time, people went to directories to get the information they were looking for, but not so much anymore. Even though the use of directories has dropped in recent years, it is still a potential source of link building. If you are willing to spend the time and energy, you can try submitting your website to directories, for the little traffic it can earn you. However, you have to be careful how you use it, as Google now see directories as linkfarms and disregards most of them.
Is leaving blog comments still a successful link building strategy?
Making relevant and helpful comments is another way to build links to your website. Most authors actually appreciate your insightful comments. However, many blog authors do not allow “dofollow links” because of the high rate of spamming and abuse. For this system to work for you, look for blog posts where your comments would be appreciated and add your link only if absolutely relevant. You can also include your link in your signature, so it goes out automatically.
Should you post on forums to obtain backlinks?
There are millions of great forums on the internet where you can make useful contributions. Behind every successful forum is a forum administrator who is always on the lookout for useful posts and contributions. They are also there to clear the forum of spam. Posting on forums is a great way to build links for your website. Once you can create an interesting topic or post that is relevant to your niche, and enough people like and share it, then the links you include in the content will have a better chance of getting out there. If the forum is a high authority website, then you have struck gold; as long as they allow “dofollow links”.
Is it worth paying for links?
This is one strategy Google is not too fond of; however, many content marketers and web owners still make use of it. Google may find it difficult detecting a link you paid for as long as the website you paid to does not expressly say they sell links. However, if they find out, you will likely be penalised. Buying link is a good way to generate link juice, but you have to be careful how you go about doing it. It will actually be beneficial to you, if you buy links from a high authority website. However, authority websites that sell links are not very common. Regardless, ensure you get your money’s worth by buying links not just from quality sites, but sites that are related to your niche.
